Be Inspired No 40: PACK THE PLATES – A LESSON IN BECOMING RESPONSIBLE

Once, when I was a child, I had a keen interest in packing my mother’s plates after every meal. My motive was simple, I always hoped to get a piece of meat as a reward for my efforts. However, one day when my mother’s plate was empty, I decided to skip the task and walked past her. It was then that my brother, who was passing by, stopped and took it upon himself to pack her plates out of a sense of duty. My mother was appreciative of his actions and while he carried the plates with both hands, she surprised him by placing a mouthful of meat into his mouth! I couldn’t believe my eyes! The plate was empty, but my brother’s hand was full. This incident taught me a valuable lesson that has stayed with me ever since.

I realized that the reward for taking up responsibilities and fulfilling our duties may not be visible or tangible, but rather, it is wrapped within the faithful fingers of devotion, dedication, and selfless service to humanity. Unfortunately, many people tend to overlook their obligations because they do not see any immediate benefits or rewards.

However, I have learned that greatness is something that is postpaid, and it rarely comes in the form of a tangible reward. It is usually disguised like an empty manger bearing the burden of a full Inn. One cannot predict the weight of a child by the size of their mother, and the blessings of being responsible to our siblings, clients, partners, friends, and those around us cannot be underestimated. If we choose to overlook these responsibilities, we risk ending up frustrated and unfulfilled.

Therefore, we must be eager to pack the plates we find on the table of responsibility, be it at home, work, church, or in any association we belong to. We must not be discouraged by those who make fun of us or the lack of immediate rewards. Instead, we should be intentional and strive to live a life of meaningful impacts in this side of eternity. This story may seem random, but I am sure it is meant for someone out there.

May we all be blessed with the strength and courage to fulfill our obligations and duties, and have a peaceful week ahead
