  1. Redemption is the buying back of somebody or the act of saving somebody from a declined, dilapidated or corrupted state and restoring him to a better condition.
  2. Redemption is the deliverance from sin by the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross, Rev 5:9
  3. Redemption involves:
    • a) Payment of ransom price for someone, Heb 9:12
    • b) Removal from a slave marketplace, 3:13
    • c) Making a full release, Rom 8:22-23

Redemption involves Atonement

Atonement is the process of redemptive work by the Lord Jesus Christ whereby sin is covered from the sight of God in such a way that it loses its power to provoke His wrath, Ex. 12:3-6, 13

What does Atonement involve?

  • a) It involves the sacrifice that Jesus paid in order to save and salvage human beings from the power of sin and Satan, Rev 13:8
  • b) It includes all the works that Jesus did in order to bring man into a right standing before God, 1 Pet 1:19-20
  • c) God foreknew and predestined that Jesus would shed His blood for the atonement of the sins of man, John 1:29
  • d) Through the death of Jesus Christ, God reconciled the world to Himself 5:18
  • e) In the Garden of Eden, God and man faced each other in fellowship. But when man fell, God and man turned their backs to each other. With the atonement of Jesus Christ on the Cross, God turned His face towards man. Man is now obligated to turn his face to God by repentance and faith in the atonement work of Jesus Christ. That is, it is now the responsibility of every man to reconcile himself to God through Jesus Christ, 2 Cor.5:20
  • f) Atonement for sin is the taking of sin away from the repentant sinner so that he is now justified from all unrighteousness, cleansed from defilement and sanctified to belong to God’s family, 1 Pet 2:24
  • g) Through atonement,
      1. Sin was blotted out, Jer. 18:23
      2. Sin was removed, Isa 6:7
      3. Sin was covered, Ps 32:1
      4. Sin was cast into the sea, Mic. 7:19
      5. Sin was cast to God’s back, Isa 38:17
      6. Sin was pardoned, Ps 78:38

Redemption involves Conversion

What is Conversion? Conversion is a change in the nature, form and function of a sinner. It involves genuine, sincere and complete repentance, Matt 18:3

      1. Conversion is not reformation. Reformation is a mere turning over a new leaf, Matt 18:2-3
      2. Conversion is not remorse. Remorse is a mere act of regret over the fruit and not over the root of sin, Matt 27:3
      3. Conversion is not penitence. Penitence is an act of making up for one’s sins by doing good works, Matthew 19:17
      4. Conversion means repentance. It is the “turning away from” sin and “turning to” God Ps 51:13
          1. Repentance is a sincere and voluntary change in the mind of the sinner causing him to turn from sin and turning to the
          2. True repentance involves turning from the rejection to the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, Acts 3:19

Redemption involves Salvation

Man needs salvation because he is sick, accursed and drowning. Salvation involves the shedding and application of the blood of a sinless Person. Jesus Christ is this sinless Person. He is the Saviour of mankind. He is not only able to save but also willing to save, Matt 9:12; Heb 2:18; Heb 9:22

What Salvation is Not:

  1. Salvation is not education, 1 Tim 6:20;    2Tim 3:7
  2. Salvation is not membership of Churches or of Secret Lodges, John 3:1-3
  3. Salvation is not sincerity or good works. Somebody can be sincere but sincerely wrong; and many people do good works for selfish reasons, Eph 2:8-9
  4. Salvation is not baptism or confirmation, 1Cor. 1:17
  5. Salvation is not good environment, Amos 6:1  
  6. Salvation is not living by the golden rule or keeping the law, Gal. 2:16

What Salvation is:

Salvation is the full deliverance of someone from sin and its power, Matt. 1:21

Redemption involves Justification

Justification is to free somebody from sin and its consequences through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Rom 5:1

Justification is an act of God, on account of Jesus Christ, declaring that a sinner is discharged and acquitted from the burden of sin and its penalty, Galatians 3:8

Redemption involves Substitution

Substitution is the act of replacing. It is the replacement of somebody or something with another.

    1. In the Old Testament, the Sheep is substituted for the Shepherd, that is, the Sheep dies for the Shepherd, 12:12-13
    2. In the New Testament the Shepherd is substituted for the Sheep, that is, the Shepherd dies for the Sheep, John 10:11
    3. This means that Jesus Christ became what He was not. He became SIN so that we might become RIGHTEOUS. The Son of God became the Son of man so that we sons of men might become the sons of God, 2 Cor. 5:21
    4. Jesus Christ is our divine Substitute who took our place and died in our stead so that we might be free and live forever with God, Heb 2:9
    5. Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God who takes the sin of the world, John 1:29
    6. Any repentant sinner who receives Jesus Christ will receive the benefits of the substitutionary work of Christ Rom 3:24-25

Redemption involves Regeneration

Regeneration is to become formed again or to be spiritually reborn. This is the act of being born again, John 3:3

    1. Regeneration is necessary because of the corruptness of  human nature, 17:9
    2. By nature, all men are dead, Eph 2:1
    3. By nature, all men are children of wrath, Eph 2:3
    4. By nature, all men are sons of disobedience, Eph 2:2
    5. By nature, all men are cursed, Rom 5:12

Redemption involves Imputation

Imputation means attributing a bad or good quality to somebody. It is to charge somebody as responsible for another’s action such as a crime or an act of righteousness, Rom 4:8

    1. Adam’s sin was imputed on the human race, Rom 5:12
    2. The sin of the human race was imputed on Jesus Christ, Isa 53:5
    3. God’s righteousness is now imputed on a believing sinner, Phil 3:7-9

Redemption involves Propitiation

Propitiation means to win somebody’s favour. It is to appease or conciliate somebody with somebody else. It is the process of appeasing the righteous indignation of the righteous and holy God, 1 John 2:2

    1. Jesus Christ became the propitiation for our sins. He stood in-between God and man so that man can win God’s favour and mercy, 1 John 4:10
    2. It was the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the Cross of Calvary that pacified and appeased the wrath of God against man, John 3:36
    3. Propitiation enables a repentant sinner obtain forgiveness of sin and grace of God, Heb 4:14-16
    4. It is man’s responsibility to appropriate this blood of Jesus by faith, 3:25

Redemption involves Adoption

Adoption means to raise a child of other biological parents as if it were your own in       accordance with formal legal procedures. Parents who adopt a child have an adopted child, and the child has adoptive parents. Any child related to the parents by birth have an adopted brother or sister; the adopted child has adoptive siblings, Gal 4:4-5

    1. While regeneration gives one his nature as a child of God, adoption gives him his position as a son of God, Rom 8:15-23
    2. God the Father initiates the adoption of the believer, Isa 1:18
    3. The adopted child of God has inheritance of the Father, Rom 8:17
    4. The adopted child of God is a joint-hair with Christ, 2:11
    5. The adopted child of God has a new name, Rev 2:17
    6. The adopted child of God can call God his Father, Rom 8:15

Redemption involves Remission

    1. Remission means forgiveness, pardon and a release from an obligation, a penalty or a debt, Eph 4:32
    2. In the Old Testament, on the Day of Atonement, the High Priest usually took two goats to the Tabernacle. One goat was killed and its blood sprinkled on the Mercy Seat while the other goat, the scape goat was allowed to go into desolate wilderness bearing the sins of the people, These two goats typified the Lord Jesus Christ in that He shed His blood for the remission of our sins as well as bore our sins on his Body. On Him was all our sins imputed, Lev 16:7-10, 21-22; Rom 5:8-13

 Redemption involves Restitution

    1. Restitution is the restoration of what somebody has falsely taken from another person, Luke 19:8
    2. Restitution is the repairing of wrongs done to another person, Neh 5:1-13
    3. Restitution is an evidence of genuine repentance, Ex 22:1-15
    4. Restitution involves righting wrongs; settling of grudges, quarrels, malice and disputes; normalizing unscriptural marital engagements; confession of wrongs to the victim with a view of obtaining his forgiveness; and replacing what was stolen with due and just interests, 6:1-6; 24:21; James 5:16
